A great feeling trim gun! What's the problem? It Works!!

... I am a general Contractor and I build mostly new construction houses and specialize in finish trim. I've used various different trim guns, some like the Porta-Cable, Duo Fast, and Senco, in my opinon are to bulky and heavy or are just not layed out well especially for a left hander. Recently I had a bostich 15 gauge angle gun that was oiless and seemed designed very well but it lasted less then 3 months, I had it replaced and the next one the drive pin broke in less then 8 months. By this time Dewalt had their gun out and I was tired of replacing the Bostich. I liked the look and feel of the Dewalt gun so I decided to give it a try, so far I have not been disappointed!! The weight of the Dewalt is just right and probably one of the lightest in its class. One writer says they tested the weight of the Bostich and the Dewalt and the Dewalt was "so much heavier". Even if their scale was right believe me you won't feel it. A few writers have complained about the fireing of this Dewalt. To this I say, if you can't handle the bump and fire trigger change it with the other trigger provided by Dewalt, but for the professionals, like myself, who have to use this gun all day it is one of the best features of the gun and one I look for. When needing to nail a lot of base or crown the time and effort this feature saves is great. The depth setting is very easy and accessible and the unjaming is easy. Maybe the simpless and yet best thought out feature of this gun is the belt hook. Try climbing a 24' extension latter with crown in one hand and a nail gun in the other just a few times and you will know what I am talking about. Loading the gun for the first time can be intimidating to some people especially if you haven't read the manual, maybe that is why some have complained about it. Really though, it give you more versatility then most guns. You can load it first and then pull the spring back, or pull the nail spring back, lock it, and then load the nails. The only reason I didn't give this gun a 5th * is that I have not had enough time with it to truly prove its durability. I have found one thing that troubles me and maybe it is just this particular gun, or the genaric nails I tried using, or even my fault for letting a little rust get on it, but from time to time it will not fire a nail. It seems that the spring may not be pushing the nails to the head enough, however I did not notice this in the begining so it may be a problem caused by something and not the guns fault at all. So far, over all, I have found this gun to be the best I have used, other then this problem. The line of sight is great, the safty boot cover is one of the best and does not seem to come off or get in the way as so may do. The popular Senco nails seem to work a little nicer then the Bostich nails of my old guns as well, but maybe thats all in my head! To sum it all up, this trim gun is another great offering by Dewalt, and I think if those who have had doubts take alittle more time to get to know their gun they would find it works!!! and works well!!!

DeWALT really hit the nail on the head with this one!!

I own both this gun and DeWALT's 18 ga. nailer. I have owned and used this gun for 2 years and have nothing but praise. It's funny, Home Depot used to carry these but gave up because so many people refused to change from other brands. Too bad for them!!! This gun is light but strong. A previous review had indicated that nails are difficult to find. What? This gun accepts all 15 gauge finish nails. Believe me I have used them all. I have run countless nails through this gun and have never had any issues with it.
br /
br /Some features that I like:
br /
br /1.The magazine is very easy to load.
br /
br /2. Indexed depth setting is easy to use and requires no tools.
br /
br /3. I can adjust the exhaust airflow to any direction. This is nice so it doesn't blow a piece of sawdust into my eyes.
br /
br /4. If you jam a nail you can open up the firing head without the use of tools to free the squished nail.
br /
br /I have used this gun on 6 inch crown molding, baseboard, installing doors and cabinetry. I have no complaints. I have no suggestions to make it better. It's perfect as far as I am concerned.
br /
br /Update: add another year of use to this nailer. Still works flawlessly.

I have been a General Contractor, Trim Carpenter Cabinet Builder throughout my 16 years in the industry and have used a lot of different nail guns. Out of all of the 15ga nailers I've owned (senco, bostich, porter), this is truly the best of the best. Just the feel of the gun is very impressive to say the least, whatever the weight. This nailer is VERY easy to use, even at 120 psi the depth stop does it's job, more than I can say for my porter, which I GAVE away after using this for a while. I've been through about 6 boxes(18000) of Senco nails and yet to have a double-tap with the bump-action trigger and it hasn't jammed even once, not quite the record with the senco or bostich. This gun sinks the nail-heads consistently and has NO kick when driving through knots. And the fact that the no-mar foot doesn't leave it's "initials" in Redwood was outstanding! I would recommend this DeWalt 15ga Nail Gun to anyone who has the need or desire for one.

The reviewer from Virginia which gave this tool a poor rating (*)does not understand how the trigger safety or the loading mechanism works. May be he should read the manual. I have owned many different brands of nailers of various types and as a finish carpenter I feel this is the best It has the clearest view of the nail target, that is a safey feature, is the best out there because it is open in front even with the rubber cover on the tip. Professionals rarely complain about a bump trigger(you still have to hold the trigger and depress the tool to fire?) and besides they give you a sequential trip too! Oliless would be nice but it may have a longer life as a lubricated tool. Also it uses the most common senco type nail. You cannot go wrong with this item.

The primary use for this tool is for finishing work with hardwood. brHaving used a number of nailers from different manufacturers with varying levels of success I took a chance and acquired this latest release from DeWalt. brThe result is positive. This tool is able to penetrate and countersink Oak with air pressure 25% below its maximum rating without noticable degregation in depth. The visibility of the point of nail entry is excellent. The angle of the magazine allows the tool to be used in tight corners. This tool is comfortable to handle and easy to load. Setting the depth is simple and appears to be accurate (with some overshoot on soft wood). brAll in all a good tool.

12/09/04 My company installs hardwood floors and this is the best finish nailer out there. I also have 3 Porter Cable DA250B angled finish nailers and they would be my 2nd choice but have had more quality problems with them. The Senco sfn 35 was junk but the SFN 30 is OK as is the SFN 40. But I would still pick the Dewalt for the best finish nailer. We shoot through some tough wood species and while the Senco and Porter Cable nailers have failed the Dewalt proves reliable.
br /Update 07/07/05: We have had this gun for about a year now, and after heavy use I am pleased to say that I am still on the 1st driver with no time in the shop for repairs. Extremely reliable gun for the contractor. I love it.
br /Note: Our Porter Cable DA250B angled finish nailers have been in the shop 1-3 times each to replace drivers and other problems, all w/in the 1st year. And sadly drivers are not covered under warranty, so my repair costs have been quite high.
br /Bottom line: The Dewalt is the gun to buy! :)
br /Update 4/6/08:
br /After 4 years of service 2 of our 6 Dewalt finish nailers have died. The driver no longer retracts after fire. I feel I got my money's worth out of them and then some. This is still a strong nailer.

The Dewalt D51275K is by far the best finish nailer I have ever used. I've been using this tool for few weeks and it has not let me down yet. The magazine is easy to load, and has good spring tension. This is probably why the tool has not missed or misfired more than once or twice. The depth-setting adjustment is easy to use, with 5 Position Indexed and the angle of the tool's design allow comfortable use in many positions, like inside corners. The narrow front allows close-to-edge fastening, and the tool is lighter and easier to handle than other brands I've tried, thereby reducing operator fatigue. It is well balanced, and a large variety of fastener sizes are available. The 2-1/2" nails easily drive through 2" oak, and are set perfectly. I have no complaints about this tool, and recommend it highly to all finishers and assemblers.

I do all of my home improvement projects myself with basic power tools. I have always installed trim with a hammer and nail set until a few days ago when I got into crown molding. Realizing the blows of a hammer could crack my new drywall joints or I could accidentally hit the ceiling I decided to purchase a nail gun. Since I will not be using the nail gun 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year, I did not want to spend several hundred dollars on a nailer. I purchased a DeWalt 15-gauge finish nailer .... Opening the box I immediatly changed the trigger to the sequence trigger since I have had experience with "double-hits" with other nailers. I hung approximately 100 feet of 1x2 backing strips and 100 feet of crown molding. The DeWalt performed flawlessly with no jams. After using this nailer I wonder why it took me so long to buy a nailer. I am very pleased with the price, weight, ease of use, and overall performance of this tool.

My wife and I bought this nailer to use for trim work in restoration and construction projects. We wanted a nailer that both of us would be comfortable operating and settled on this one after testing the feel of the models offered at Home Depot. We could not be more pleased. With its light weight and angled feed rail, we both use it all day long with no fatigue and perfect results. Another reviewer complained about the automatic trigger which ships with the unit. We do not understand his difficulty since the "automatic" trigger still requires depression of the front guard and trigger simultaneously to fire. There is not much chance of that happening by accident. Also, we had no problem with the feed mechanism. The manual explains that the user can either insert a stick of nails and pull the slide back to that point or the user can pull the slide full back into a locking position, slip in however many nails is desired, and then release the slide. It would be nice to have oiless operation, but since the gun comes with safety glasses and oil, it has been effortless to squeeze in the few drops when we need it. We have had continual flawless operation and we highly recommend this tool.

I bought this when it was on sale @ Home Despot when it first came out and there was a promo on. Let me preface this and say this one has been used by 3 or 4 of us home owners to put in baseboard, crown, and casing as well as a bunch of nailing on some hardwood floors.
br /
br /Let me also state that I have $2k worth of other dewalt tools that work beautifully. This is the first and last pneumatic tool though.
br /
br /I noticed that it did have a bit of a tendency to double tap. After using it a short bit, I lent it to a friend. He had a jam (we're both been using nothing but Porter Cable nails) of some sort that broke it. Being a good guy, he assumed it was his fault and paid $80 to have it repaired.
br /
br /I got it back in working order, and then promptly had it break again. This time, I called Dewalt service and they said it was an early model and they would replace the piston which had been replaced in later models. They tested it and returned it to me working.
br /
br /I ran through less than a strip of nails, and went to do something over my head, and discovered that it wouldn't fire upside down. Another trip back to the service center, and it was fixed again. When I took it home, I discovered that they'd replaced my sequential trigger with the other type.
br /
br /Arrrggh.
br /
br /Anyway, when it works, this nailer is nice and lightweight. It sets nails beautifully. I'm not fond of the composite nail strip, nor the depth adjust and safety mechanism.

Buy it from Tool crib, SORRY LOWES, Bought a bostich some time ago, nothing but trouble. The feed rail on the bostich does not allow the nails to feed freely. Note i was using bostich nails. Yes 15 guage finish nails! Recently bought the Dewalt haven't had it long but i like it. Credentials??
br / My father has been a cabinet maker remodeler and finisher for 40 years. When he first saw the problems with the bostich he said I wouldn't have it...! He liked the DeWalt right away, easy removal of nails, and yes it feeds the nails. No missfires yet. When i've had it for a couple of years i will update this.. By the way incase you're wondering, my dad has only porter/cable finish nailers and staplers, except one bostich. The bostich is 9 months and we've replaced the the plunger, it broke. Half the price of a gun i might add. And it sticks quite often. If i were you I would look toward the dewalt. The reason i say buy it from tool crib is because the lowes here were out and they kept telling me next week. Its light has a nice belt hook and it feeds, it'll take awhile to c if its dependable!!

Gun has never misfired, but spring that returns nose piece for next firing sticks quite often. Thus, the trigger doesn't fire the next nail. I have had to manually pull the nose piece down in order to free the trigger. Loading is not bad, but could be better. Nails do not freely slide into the mechanism. Gun is strong and is light to handle. I'm only slightly dissapointed.

It's a Winner!

Not a single misfire! This is a light finish nailer that I've used for 2-1/2 years. Homeowner application, only. Used it for crown molding other trim. Also attached many, many pressure treated spindles around my rear deck front entrance rail.
br /
br /Easy loading. Very light.
br /
br /I haven't used the bump firing trigger, so I can't review that.
br /
br /The depth control is easy to use, but it seems like the graduations are a bit far spread. There are only two settings I ever seem to use. I am puzzled by the highest setting...it leaves the nail head way above the surface. I thought perhaps that this might be for situations where you were temporarily tacking something in place and intending to remove the nail later on.
br /
br /The adjustable exhaust is nice, but it turns too stiffly. Maybe as time goes on it will break in and swivel more easily. Or possibly I can find a way of loosening the fit. In any event, it's only a minor inconvenience. I tend to forget about the exhaust until I switch hands and get a blast in the face. Then I really appreciate the adjustable feature.
br /
br /The belt hook is great.
br /
br /This 15 ga. Finish nailer has done everything that I've asked of it. Thumbs-up!

I've done finish carpentry for over 15 years and my Senco Boat Anchor finally died a month ago. I needed something quick for the next day so headed to Lowe's where the Dewalt was $20 less than the Hitachi and Senco. I have several Dewalt tools including the new 12" slider which I love, so I bought it. This has got to be the most comfortable finish gun to use ever. The belt hook is great and it's darn light.
br / Unfortuneately, from day one I had trouble with the safety plunger on tip. On about 3 out of ten shots the plunger would not return fully so gun would't fire consecutively. I had to pull it back by hand. Then yesterday I finally needed to fire some 2 1/2 inch nails and found they would'nt slide into gun smoothly so I was left with a situation were I would fire a nail, pull the safety tip out, push the nail strip up and fire again. Not good. So again, sorry Dewalt, I needed a gun for the next day so back to Lowe's it went. These WERE generic brand nails. I wish I could have given Dewalt a chance to fix the issue but no time. I bought the Hitachi and it works great so far but can't give an review of it yet.

Nice fit and feel but poor reliability.

I bought this gun and was happy with it for the first 1.5 years but it then developed a substantial internal air leak and occasional piston jam as several other reviews have stated. After checking with Dewalt for repair cost I decided to purchase the Milwaukee 7140-21 instead and have been very pleased with it so far. The Milwaukee 7140-21 also has a 5 year warranty and a selectable trigger that is a great feature.

I moved up to this product after having a Porter Cable Bammer (for which I was no longer able to get reasonably price fuel cells). Truthfully, I am glad I was forced to make the switch. I used it to trim out the case molding and floor trim of a 2400 sq.ft. basement finishing job and it performed great. Not a single jam or miss-fired nail. The depth adjustment is simple and easy to use (no tools required). Although I didn't use it, it also has the ability to be set up for a bump nailer configuration which would be great for hanging paneling. Overall, I connot think of a single reason not to recommend this product to casual remodelers/woodworkers like myself. As for the career finish carpenters and construction workers... I cannot speak to the long term durability of this product, but from an engineering standpoint, I cannot see any obvious failure modes.

I've had this gun for a little over a year and it is a dog. It worked great the first time out but it has malfunctioned in some capacity ever since then. I've shot less than 300 nails with the gun and the first problem I noticed was the exaust leak. Since the second time I used the tool, it has had an exaust leak. I've broken the gun down, checked all of the seals, cleaned everything and the problem temporarily goes away but it always comes back. The more recent problem I've had is the gun stops firing. I have not figured it out but it seems the air releases but the hammer does not. When it happens, I'll repeatedly bump a scrap piece of lumber until it starts nailing again.
br /
br /I've maintained the gun well ... oiled it as instructed and really like the weight, balance and the belt hook. It just does not function consistently. I've since ordered a Senco FP41xp and I'm hoping it performs much better.

I'm a contractor and use this gun everyday for everything from exterior trim in New England temperature extremes (many days in single digits)to interior trim and hardwood flooring. Thousands of nails fired, including stainless all sizes without jamming. Oil the gun daily and use 34 degree nails, you won't be dissapointed. Belt hook is good too, especially on pump jacks and wall brackets doing trim.

This gun started out bad for me, first I was using nails left over from my old Senco sfn2 gun. Turns out they are 14ga. Nails and are a little too tight for the 15ga Dewalt. They worked but had a lot of sticking. So I went to my local lumberyard a bought some generic 15ga nails. The new problem was the gun that held the nails together colleted in the nose of the gun and jammed things up. Out for a new box of senco 15ga nails and things work like a charm. But it was touch and go for a while with this gun, but I very happy now.

I recent bought this for some minor trim work. Wow, this is light and accurate. So far I have no double firing and no jam. I've used a Senco finished nailer before. Dewalt is much better. This biggest advantage is the weight. This is so light and has good weight distribution for good balance. The belt clip is a great idea. I often drop tools off the ladder, so the belt clip is very handy. The nail depth adjustment, to me, is useless. I often adjust the compressor.
br /
br /I am not a contractor, but I do enjoy building things myself: planter boxes, trims, minor framing, other fixer upper things. This is one useful nailer. As always, Dewalt has made an exceptional tool.

I have used the D51275K finish nailer for a couple of years now on crown and base; casement; and have had no problems with it (or its Dewalt companion 18ga 51238K brad nailer, also excellent). It gets intensive use during trim-out phases and I have had only two jams that I can recall (neither one was the guns fault). The tools-free access to the firing head had the nails cleared quickly. The adjustable exhaust flow is a real plus, as is the the ease of depth adjustment. The gun loads easily and I have had no trouble at all finding nails for it. I have been able to locate all lengths in small to large lots on Amazon's web site. I have had virtually trouble-free operation, so I am at a real loss to explain the 'uneven' reviews from users! Perhaps some of the users need to read the manual of operation a little more closely? Perhaps some are using a different angle nail strip than spec'd? Perhaps the factory had a quality control problem for a while?? So far, I have not had any problems nailing even hardwood trims such as oak, but then, most of the trim has been with softwoods and compressed foam/synthetic products.
br /
br /This nailer's light weight means less operator fatigue and more production. As an aside, the Dewalt (D51238K) 18ga brad nailer is perfect for smaller 'build-up' mouldings like cove, quarter rounds, etc. I have never experienced a single jam with the 18ga. although, admittedly, it doesn't get as intensive use as the 15ga.
br /
br /Note: I purchased 'Grizzly's #H3401 Nail Gun Carrying Bag' from Amazons third-party vendor Grizzly. It is designed to carry framing nailers but notes that it will carry a couple of finish nailers. My Dewalt 15GA and 18GA finish nailers fit fine; the adjustable straps at the bottom of the bag secure the nailers tightly. The bag has hand-carrying handles and also a shoulder strap. I doubled over a large piece of cardboard to slip between the nailers to protect them from rubbing and banging against each other. Its a great way to transport and protect your nailers; both in one bag. Check it out.

br /The only issues I have had with it are, limited selection of nails for it in the big Orange Store. And then using it for small trim when my Sears Brand 18 guage finish nailer wore out. This means now I need to upgrade and get the dewalt 18 gauge. I will aslo need to get a framming gun as well since this is not big enough to fasten 2X's.

As a new homeowner and novice do-it-yourself person, I was apprehensive about getting the right tools especially on my crown moulding and baseboard installation project in my dining and living rooms. I had borrowed and used my brother-in-law's electric nailer to do the work. It was not very powerful and did not hold the crown very well. The electric nailer also used a very small (in length and diameter) nails that looked almost like tacks. I ended up having to undo the crown and baseboards which now had extra holes in them.

br /After reading a host of reviews on Amazon.com and other Home Improvement websites, I found that this DeWalt 15-Guage Finish Nailer (model D51275K) was what I needed for the work on finishing up crown moulding and baseboards. [Though it would be possible to use higher guage (16-, 17-, 18- guages) nailers, the diameter (guage) of the nails would leave too big a hole and might even split the moulding and baseboards.] Combined with a small Craftsman air compressor and using the 2 and a half inch 15-guage nails, I was able to finish my crown moulding and baseboard installation project efficiently and without any issues. This nailer is very easy to use and works incredibly well for what it's intended for. I have used it to work on projects in a couple of other rooms also and it has been great so far. I highly recommed this nailer for simple trim work indoors.

br /WARNING for other Newbies: Read all the instructions and warnings carefully. This is a very powerful tool (as I found out). I tried using the nailer on fixing up a loose and broken kitchen drawer and the nailer shot the nail almost all the way through the soft thin wood of the drawer. I can see how there could be accidents. The thrust of air kickback from the compression can be strong and very loud. When my wife used it to help with the projects, she was startled by the sudden air compression kickbacks. But, after that first one it was smooth sailing.

DeWalt hit the nail on the head (no pun intended) with this great nail gun. Works flawlessly, feels great, well balanced and looks good. This one wins hands down over the rest of the players. Enough said!

I bought the nailer as a gift for my husband. He was always borrowing our neighbor's for home projects. Now that he has one of his own, more things are being done around the house. It's great for a novice carpenter.

Truly a piece of junk, but it looks great!

Boy this thing looks and feels great. Just wish it worked. Retired the PC angle nailer for this one, because the PC weighed as much as my car. The PC also makes a huge hole with each nail. This DeWalt though has major problems each time I use it. I now give up. It NEVER sinks nails all the way, despite the depth adjustment. It double fires more than my bostitch N80 coil nailer, which is known for double firing. It is difficult to load, and the trigger safety moves to the on position if you just breath on it. All in all, a useless, expensive tool. Dewalt makes some glorious tools, but this one just plain stinks. If history is a guide, they will get it right eventually, but only when people stop buying it, or complain enough. Basically, it does not do what it is supposed to do. A MAJOR disappointment, as I love all my other dewalt tools. If people think this is how these things are supposed to work, then they should try other types of these units.pTime for the Bostitch N62 or Senco. I've had it.....

Great Tool, hard to find nails though.

Very nice tool, light, doesn't Clog, and stick like some of my others nailing tools, I do have a hard time finding the nails at a Fail price.
