Just finished laying 42 sq with this gun, and I have nothing but praise. Well balanced and one of the lightest guns I have ever used. In 42 sq, one jam and about dozen nails left proud. Standard home store nails work very well in this gun and are easy and cheap to find. The tool-less depth of drive works just fine and the side-loading feature is great, very fast and easy. When it is out of nails, you know it, it will stop firing.
br /
br /Yes, this is a contact "bump" nailer, and if you are getting double and triple misfires, you are using this gun WRONG. If you are laying shingles all day long and you have to pull the trigger on every nail, your finger will fall off. Put your shingle down, pull the trigger, and shoot four nails, next. That is the beauty of a contact nailer. On that note, BE CAREFULL, after a long run out, your finger has a tendency to stay on the trigger, if you were to then bump any part of your body at this point, you too will get nailed.
br /
br /The Cons: Superficial really, come on Bostitch (and other mfg's), Give us a cheap plastic molded case for our expensive tools and would it have been so hard to have installed an air nipple at the factory, save me a trip to the hardware store.

I purchased the nail gun about three weeks ago. I am a foreman on a flat roofing crew who shingles on the weekends and on a few jobs that shingles are required. Last weekend I used the gun to shingle a 18sq ranch and was very enthused about how the gun ran. The gun never skipped, misfired, or jammed. I then took it to work to finish a shingle job on a 62sq roof. I dont like to use my own personal equipment on company time, but the way that the gun performed I knew that it would make the job that much easier. The light weight of the gun made the accuracy phenomenal and effortlessly quick. I had one jam while doing the ridge vent, which was easily fixed in 5 sec. The gun never had any other problem. This gun made shingling a joy.

I looked at this gun based on the journal of light constuction reviews I read july 06 issue. They liked the last nail capture feature and I must admit that this was my only complaint with my porter cable gun. So I bought one localy (same price as amazon with a case so it made up for the tax) and have done 3 roofs of about 20 squares each and really like it. I have seen lots of fusing on here about this and that but I muat say that if a tool was giving me this much fuse I would bring it in and see what the repair shop says. When I have had problems in the past our local reapir shop was able to get us a new gun, drill, or exstend our warranty with factory approval. I guess the second question is how much do you beat on your tools?...I tether not only my ladders and my self but my espensive tools too....nothing screws with a gun more than a three story drop. Well enough rambling...for the money an excellent gun...I still use my porter cable for a spare gun when we have an extra guy on the roof so I can't really bad mouth them...but if your banging out 5 or 6 squares a day by yourself 30 plus coils with our 12 pitch roof you appreciate the nail capture, easy load, and weight of this gun.
br /
br /update: after a year this gun needed a rebuild because the nailes stopped advancing...and we bought the new portable cable while waiting for it to came back from the shop...we still prefer the Bos for its features but I will say the porter cables are more durable ....

My boss has 5-6 Hitachi roofing guns and I always thought they worked fine; didn't have to pound down hardly any nails. Then for a side job, part of my compensation was a new roofing nailer. In asking around everyone said to either go with Hitachi or Bostitch. Having already been using the Hitachi's I decided to try the Bostitch. What an awesome roofing nailer!! Blows the Hitachi's away. The single door side load canister is far easier and faster to load than the Hitachi's 2-door canister (side load for the nail feed, bottom load for the coil). Also I work in Minnesota and when the temp dropped to single digits every one of the Hitachi's started dry firing constantly and I ended up going and grabbing the Bostitch, which hasn't dry fired once (I would rather not have to use my own tools on my employers jobs, but the Hitachi's are junk in cold weather- they work fine when the weather is warmer)

Bostitch are tops!

I have had this gun for 2 months now . It is a really well built gun. After reading the firt guys review I was skeptical about buying this gun and then went ahead and bought one anyways (sometimes you have to try things yourself) After I purchased the gun I took it on a 15 Square job and the gun is excellent not one problem. I used Bostitch nails also. I have 4 RN-45-I Roofing nailers and thought they would not make a better gun. But after trying the RN-46 Bostitch has came up with a nother great gun. Keep up the good work Bostitch!!! I also just purchased a second Rn-46 this past week.

Stay away from this gun ... you have been warned.

I rented this gun prior to buying to make sure I wanted it. The rental unit worked great. Sure I had to set one or two nails manually and had at least one jam in every coil ... but isn't that the norm? So I purchased this gun from a local hardware store. What a mistake! The Bostich I bought (RN46-1) jammed every 10th nail and I had to set one too many manually. It took a 20 hour job and turned it into a 40 hour job. Needless to say when I returned the gun the first comment I got was, "Well you need to use Bostich nails." What? Are you kidding me? So I took my refund money, came here to Amazon and got the Hitachi NV45AB2, used the same box of coil nails and went to town on a roofing job. 20 coils later and I have yet to jam or manually set any of the nails. Do yourself a favor, stay away from the Bostich.

Bostitch is a great gun, but...

Bostitch RN46-1 is a great gun, but know how to use it. Contact Trip has a NEW meaning with the NEW Bostitch. It's faster and easier. You don't have to slam and pull the trigger. You don't have to put your body on the gun to keep it from recoiling. Just read the instructions for once. This isn't your uncle's Bostitch.
br /Like anybody, I like to roof. I can move fast with this gun. But I know how to use it. From the reviews I have read, I can tell who knows how to use this gun from those who don't. Don't tell me that Bostitch isn't a high quality product. It's worth every penny.
br /If you are having problems with your specific type application, then please confirm you model type gun. If you have a RN46-1 then you have contact trip. If you have a RN46-2, then you have a sequential trip. If you don't know the difference, then don't question the integrity of the Bostitch.

Recently purchased RN46-1 a week ago to put on 25 sq of roof and 16 sq of Hardi plank siding. I'm not an everyday roofer, I am a remodeler but I am confident that this tool would do just fine everyday. The contact trigger is great. And in using about 14,000
br /nails (7,200 1 1/4 Bostitch nails and 7,200 1 3/4 cheapo's) I have had only one jam. Ironically it was with the Bostitch nails. I would recommend this tool to anyone. I am not quite sure what the issue is with some who have rated this tool poorly. It has plenty of power just wish it had a optional sequential trigger for vinyl siding, the user does tend to double fire if you try and use it in this way. But that is operator error not the tools fault.

Another great tool from Bostitch

Was recently looking for a new RN45 and bought the RN46. Just finished the first roof with it. Lightweight, fast, and reliable. No jams, or misfires. I've been using Bostitch nailers for years and as usual, always satisfied with every product they put out. I highly recommend.

i don't know why everybody is calling this nailer junk. I bought mine two years ago and have shingled approximately 200 roofs with it. I have only had one nail jam and a few hang up but that was all in one coil of nails and it was an old coil where the wires had corroded. I also have had no trouble what so ever, I am thinking it is about time for new O rings but it still works like the day i bought it. I tell everybody that askes me to get this nailer.

Recently bought this to re-roof our house. My wife used it for 12 straight hours with absolutely no problems! Very light with flawless operation. She had never TOUCHED an air nailer of any kind (claimed she was afraid) before this one, yet actually had fun with it!! I'm sure she could have gone longer if we didn't run out of roof! She wouldn't let me use it. The few times I was able to pry it from her hands I found it very comfortable to use. I've used several coil roofers in the past, this is the best I've held. Very light.
br /Overall, excellent gun for a reasonable price. Highly recommended.

I am a carpenter by trade but do all aspects of home building from frame to finish as well as remodeling work. I've used this gun for about 80sq with little problems, the occasional proud nail or the nail coil gets bent in my tool bag causeing a jam are about it. I too have used this gun on Hardiplank siding (as someone else mentioned), i must admit though it is not as consistent on cement board as it is on shingles. But a time saver nuntheless. If i ever pitch this one off a roof, i'll buy another.

I had an excellent experience with this tool. I'm not a contractor, but I put on a 15 square 7x12 roof with it and had no problems. The only issue I had was that the instructions referenced a safety, but I could not figure out how to turn it on.

br /I don't know how well this gun would stand up to "52 week a year" use, but it did a great job for my purposes.

I work in interior exterior home improvement in the Jersey Shore area... I bought a couple of the Bostitch RN46 roofing guns reconditioned on ebay : hehee about a year ago for $150.00 each... I use them from time to time on small projects like home garge addition roofs and some small shed re-roofs etc... these guns are very lightweight and easy to use... the quick ajust depth setting knob on the gun is a great asset to have so you don't have to go up down the ladder to fiddle with the air compressor psi gauge... I've seen a couple of bad reviews on this gun... they could have bought lemons or may have tried to use other types/brands of nails that have the plastic or metal coating connectors that don't jive with this gun and that could have caused the gun to jam and misfire maybe too??... to avoid any hassles make sure you buy the right roofing nails to match this gun!.. I've had these guns for about a year now and never had any problems yet... so good luck to all and go nutz!

I got this gun yesterday, and I loved it after 2 nails. I had no problems whatsoever. I wish I had bought this thing several roofing projects ago... It actually made the roofing job kinda fun! Light weight, easy to load, plenty of power, only one door to fool with, and locks out after the last nail. I'm happy with my purchase.

Howdy. Look, I have about 33 squares to do by myself, so have decided to do it in sections. I have a day time job, so I am fitting this in around the weather in the evenings. My problem is the jamming. I can live with the multiple nails. But really, after the first jam, I could not easily clear it, so finished out a few squares by hand. I also went on line and read these reviews, and discovered I was not using it right, that I should just pull the trigger, and push the nose down across the shingles. So now I am doing that right, and still getting a few multiples. The next day it jammed again, and I was able to clear it. But 5 minutes later it jammed again, and I could not. As getting on and off the roof was wasting too much time, I finished the other 4 squares off by hand. I then cleared the jam later that night. I still have about 25 or so squares left to do over the next several weeks. And I like this tool, but WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT THESE JAMS?

Just received the nailer and did a 2500sq ft roofing job with 3 tab comp. Just standard roofing. This nailer keeps shooting doubles and triples when it doesn't mis-feed. In over 35 years as a construction professional I have never had a tool this difficult to use. I am a big guy (250 pounds) and have a firm grip. The nailer shoots multiple nails no matter how hard I lean on it so bounce is not a factor.Every several nails it will not feed it makes a kind of a wheezing sound and then pops into place. Sometimes it has to be advanced by pulling on the feed arm. The depth adjustment is a clic stop type and does not seem to be very acurate: the nail either stands proud or it gets punched right through the shingles. I have a number of nailers and my favorites are Senco and Porter Cable. Regardless of what I have read in my opinion Porter Cable still makes very good power tools: I should have stuck with Porter Cable for the roofing nailer. If you are thinking of buying this nailer I strongly suggest you reconsider.
