UPDATE: Field Evaluation completed on 1/11/2007. Field tests started in October of 2006.
We wanted to wait a few months to see how this 180psi framer performed out in the field before making any comments.
First of all its liter weight helps with continuous nailing and is very easy on the wrists. It's lite weight but, loading the gun seems a bit strained with paper collated nails because the paper tends to swell just a bit under rainy conditions making the spring coil strain to put enough pressure on the nail pack.
This causes hang-ups of the nails by not causing force to push the nails into the gun. You have to pull back and let the spring load hit the nails again. This can also cause multiple jams and miss fires.
When using ring shank 3 1/2 inch nails (All Brands) they have a tough time seating into the wood surface. We constantly have to re hit the nail heads with a framing hammer.
When framing with "E" rated green fir lumber it is next to impossible to get a 100% nail seat.
The other serious draw back is the fact that this gun uses the 175psi compressor to operate which we own and use in the field with this gun.
It has an 80% duty cycle and will use 80% of an hour trying to keep up with this guns CFM.
No case comes with this tool which makes it an even less attractive gun for the contractor.
In our full field tests we gave the gun lots of oil before each day's usage. Treated it with careful considerations and allowed it to operate at is full capacity., giving it every chance to prove its field ability. It has failed its over all functionality and there for is not recommended for the home owner or the contractor in general.
We will give this gun a 2.2 on the lower side of 5 stars and a 3.2 if used with non ring shank nails.
My over all suggestion is to pass this one up! It is not worth the asking price in any way for the on the job trouble you will encounter. And with the other problems described can be an unsafe tool because of the UN needed distractions.
It is lite weight but... A poor Design!
